I’ve always wanted to volunteer for various organizations, but more or less never got off my ass to do it. I’ve finally done it. I’m a member of HRSAR (or will be as of monday when my paperwork gets back), I’ve volunteered to work at a big outdoor concert (information tent, Canadian Forces Halifax Rockfest 2009), and for the 2009 Buskers (probably information tent or runner, unconfirmed yet). I’m taking my Standard First Aid + CPR (C) + AED training in August, and will be registering as a volunteer for St. Johns Ambulance the day I pass my exams. Once I am registered as a Volunteer I will be signing up for AMFR (Advanced Medical First Responder) training (40 hours!) and will be ready to work at various concerts and public events as a medical first responder.
There are more things I want to do though. I want to work with the Childrens Hospital and visit sick kids. I have experience here, I was one myself (heart disease and 2 open hearts woot!). I want to do something international, some year take vacation from work and go work in a 3rd world country. Also I want to work at a Salvation Army, working with those in the hardest parts of there lives. The though of working with homeless and addictions frightens me, but it would open my mind and open my heart. However I have enough going on right now with my First Aid, Events, and SAR. Perhaps next year.
