Things on the go…..

October 21st, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Its hard to do a development blog, I’ve learn’t this. For a few reasons, mainly because anything really cool is protected behind NDA contracts, and also your so busy working on stuff, you don’t get a chance to talk about it. I keep a semi-up to date portfolio at http://jeffreyhann.com/portfolio.php but what isn’t up there yet is what I’m sharing with you now.
I’m working on a flash game at work. It will be release as a casual game, and its basically a puzzle game. It is very cool, there is nothing like it, and you will love it. But that’s all I can say.
I’m now the webmaster for Hal-Con (http://hal-con.com/), a local (re: Halifax) comic book and sci-fi convention that will be having its first year in the fall of 2010. I’ve set them up with a PHPBB forum and am working with them on getting a mailing list setup as well, other than that its small update, but still nice to do some volunteer work.
I’m also taking over the website for E2C, a huge orienteering challenge with both 8 and 24 hour courses. This is run by HRSAR, with lots of community support. To explain how tough this can be, the military runs it yearly. However anyone can do it, you choose the pace. Anyways, its a pretty basic site right now, but I’m gonna fix that, I’m thinking Drupal, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, and updating there current payment system to PayPal (currently accepts checks by mail).
Thats about it for now :)

Photoshop Express?

March 27th, 2008 · No Comments · The News

So, photoshop has a new toy/site out now called photoshop express. So basically it is 1 part a flickr/picasa/whatever rip off, because it allows you to have albums, store up to 2gb of photos and have a public gallery. It is secondly, 1 part a super super light version of photoshop. I have yet to truly play with it but here are my first observations.

- It claims to link to various other photo sites, but it neglects the #1 site, flickr… why would it even do this?
- It isn’t anything new. Flickr, Picasa, and all the other sites out there allow you to rotate, adjust color, light, and the basic other little things that need to be done to almost every photo.
- 2gb of storage… I know it is just a public beta, but Adobe can afford a lot more than this, and when many sites give unlimited storage, this is a joke

Microsoft buying yahoo… a good thing?

February 5th, 2008 · No Comments · The News

I was reading a article on Techcrunch and it was talking about how this might be a good thing for this to happen. They mentioned that if Google and Yahoo merge than it would eliminate competition. That Microsoft would bring the Yahoo! brand up to what it once was, the homepage of the internet. And would also help add fuel to Yahoo’s fire of sites and techologies that seem to be struggling due to there lack of value. Lets face it, Yahoo! once ruled the internet, and now they don’t. They need cash, and Microsoft is probably one of the best sources to get it. If they keep the brand, and keep the sites, then this could be a excellent thing. Only time will tell though.

I love stats!

February 4th, 2008 · No Comments · The News

So,this morning I made some big changes to this site. I added a tag cloud, social networking links at the bottom of each post, google ads, and some more suttle things. There is a much larger ajax prescense now, and your posts are automatically checked for spam than approved. Also, I am tracking statictics. Just how many people view the site, and what pages they went to. Nothing personal. I am using a plugin for wordpress that records statistics from the blog.

Also, here is my current flickr stats

More dirty pics!

February 1st, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

OK, so I took a few pictures similar to the last. And because I really loved the way the come out, I feel the desire and need to have them seen. It makes me feel like am appreciated and respected. I need that feeling, I’m a very sad little man. So this is the only place I will post this pic publicly, and this is because this site is very unpopular. Eitherway, I took it for the artistic look, if you dont see that well, your mind is sick :P

I thought this would be a interesting contrast for a photo. It probably means something different to everyone, for me it doesn’t mean anything, just a idea. Maybe, life, and good health.

Update:

Just to keep everyone happy and not scare off any family (or soon to be), this photo has been set as private on flickr. You should still see it on this site, but you wont be able to view it on flickr. Sorry folks.

Microsoft is “buying” yahoo?!?

February 1st, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

OK, ill give in, I’ll join in on the bandwagon just this one time. Yes, Microsoft has made a $44.6 Billion dollar bid to completely purchase yahoo and all stock. I’m willing to bet that this will go through, yahoo knows they cant compete with google, and they also know Microsoft can’t, so it might be a wise effort to take the cash, stop trying to do the impossible, and let Microsoft think they have a chance. However, my fear is what will happen to the internet. Yahoo runs alot of sites currently, my favorite is flickr. If you read the posts throughout flickr groups, there is a overall fear about this. Microsoft has a bad habbit of buying and killing good things, and I don’t want flickr to die. Here is the link.
